I’ve been testing out HiNativeApp lately and I have to say that it’s quite a useful app. Why? You can get translations to virtually anything you want to say with native speakers and fellow learners. If you enjoy using Lang-8 then you may love using this app created by the same people!
How Does HiNative Work?
You ask a question in a language you’re learning and get feedback from native speakers and fellow learners. You can also provide feedback for those learning your native language(s). You can filter this app to only seeing unanswered questions, your languages of interest and questions with audio. Learning correct and nature usage of the language(s) with each question you post or respond to. Record your voice and get your pronunciation evaluated alongside your usage of the language. This will determine whether or not you sound natural in your target language. This will allow you to construct sentences more native-like rather than the unnatural ones found in textbooks and phrasebooks. You can essentially ask any question and find a way to express it in your new language. Be aware that if you do not go the settings and turn off notifications that you will be bombarded constantly. But who knows, maybe you want to keep them turned on. I just didn’t like my phone incessantly going off. Otherwise, it was great to see other’s opinions and feedback on how something would be translated, whether or not it sounded natural and alternative ways of expressing a specific phrase or concept.
Is HiNative Free?
Yes and no. At the time of writing this review, HiNative was 100% free to use and had not incorporated its premium features yet. However, when that happens the cost will $9.99USD (convert currency) per month. The premium features will include more feedback and more tools available at your disposal. Such as being able to browse your bookmarks, being able to search for what you want to say, get notifications for any question and be able to provide voice answers to questions. Other than that, we will just have to wait and see what HiNative has in store for us.
- Feedback from native speakers and fellow learners.
- Get your speaking and writing corrected.
- Record your own pronunciation.
- Various languages to choose from.
- Complex or strange questions will often get buried and left unanswered. (Try keeping it simple and to the point or explain clearly what you’re trying to describe in the target language. Vague questions are difficult to answer and will be ignored if the native speaker cannot figure out what exactly it was you were trying to say.)
HiNative is an essential tool to make yourself sound more natural in whatever language you happen to be learning. This app would make an outstanding added feature to your current method of learning languages. Obviously, I am not going to recommend this a stand-alone resource but it works well to complement what you’ve already learnt and perhaps provide the hint you need to move past any plateaus that stand in your way. Overall, it’s remarkably beneficial to anyone learning a foreign language. Highly recommended!
HiNative can be downloaded for through the App Store or Google Play.
