It’s that time of the year cupcakes! How many of you are taking the italki New Year’s Language
Challenge? I’m a bit late to this challenge because of things that came up in my life that needed to be taken care of first before I could move ahead. Today, I decided that I’m going to just get out there and do it! I’ve already done 3 and won the last one of 2014 so why not? My languages definitely need a boost so these challenges definitely keep me motivated.
Which Language(s) Are You Learning For The Challenge?
It’s to finally reveal which language(s) I’m focusing on. For this challenge I will be learning German, Catalan and possibly a few Japanese lessons here and there. But mostly German and Catalan for now. I decided to ground myself from further wanderlust so I can focus on languages I’ve already dedicated time to in recent years. Catalan was official learnt last year for the first time and I’ve been learning German on and off since 2008 (so around the same time as when I decided to get serious with my Japanese, but I was able to focus on German officially until 2011 and what time I didn’t dedicate to Japanese I did to German.
It does help that I already speak 3 Germanic languages prior to learning German (Danish, English and Swedish) so that definitely helps making learning it a lot more easier, one could say. I also feel that my German skills are still lacking quite a bit since the one people I’ve practised my German on were Swiss friends, German and Austrian tourists and a co-worker who’s a native speaker. So I would like to be able to hold a more in depth conversation with my co-worker and when I get to visit my Swiss friends by speaking to them completely in German without having to switch to English as much.
So if I decided to add Japanese to this challenge I will be taking 10 Catalan lessons, 5 German lessons and 5 Japanese lessons, or 10 German lessons, 5 Catalan and 5 Japanese lessons or 10 Japanese lessons, 5 Catalan lessons, and 5 German lessons. However, If I decide not to add Japanese for this challenge it will be 10 lessons in Catalan and 10 lessons in German. I think it evens out well this way.
I already booked 5 Catalan lessons and 2 German lessons so far. The 5 Catalan lessons and 1 German lesson were confirmed, I’m just waiting on another tutor to confirm it. Meanwhile I will be booking more lessons until I have 20 lessons required to complete the challenge.
Are you participating in the italki New Year’s Challenge for 2015? If so, which language(s) are you learning? If not, how are you language studies going so far this year? Are you learning German or Catalan? Are you a native speaker of these languages? I would love to hear how you are going to take on this challenge!
